Marketing Tips

Why small businesses fail to marketing themselves effectively

Marketing remains a mystery for many small businesses.  Part of this is because marketing is not one of the skill sets that went into the decision to launch the business.  Typically, the entrepreneur has an idea or a skill that is in demand in the community.

Some accounting skills are required to keep track of the money coming in and the money being spent by the business.  But marketing?  To many small business owners, they envision expensive and often ineffective direct mail campaigns that are a pain to design, or display ads in newspapers and the yellow pages.

Here are some common reasons businesses don't market effectively or consistently:

  • They don't know the available tools
  • They don't know how to use the tools
  • They aren't committed to a consistent marketing effort
  • They don't have a marketing strategy
  • They don't have the time to do this stuff

Larger businesses have someone on the payroll whose sole job is to handle marketing.  A business with less than, say 20 employees is unlikely to be able to justify the expense of a full-time marketing professional.
